The Aegialis Hotel & Spa is the sole five-star hotel in Amorgos. A very large building with 55 fully-equipped rooms, it stands at the fork in the road from Aigiali to Tholaria, and its suites, furnished in the local folk style, are justly called the gem of Amorgos by its guests.
The first beguiling sight to catch the eye is the splendid view over the bay of Aigiali surmounted by the massive Mt Krikelos, the island’s highest peak, with the Aegean Sea stretching into the distance beyond. This is the vista from the public rooms situated on varying levels, the lovely big swimming pool crossed by a little bridge, and, of course, from the bedrooms.
The Aegialis Hotel & Spa houses one of Cyclades Islands’ most fully equipped thalassotherapy centre, a gym, covered pool and cubicles for spa and massage treatments, which also share that beautiful view.
Irene Yiannakopoulou, the hotel’s dynamic, energetic owner, is a native of Amorgos who at the age of eighteen married in 1972 and went with her husband, Nikitas, to live in New Jersey. When they returned to Amorgos years later, they decided to build the hotel, which opened its doors in 1992.
Irene is fully knowledgeable about all aspects of the modern hotel business, personally involved in the island’s folk traditions, interesting sites and sights to visit, the festivities and local products, as well as, naturally, the contemporary realities of Amorgos since she is on the town council. Irene is consequently occupied from dawn to dusk, keeping an eye on everything, encouraging her guests to get to know every facet of Amorgos in every way (even lessons in cooking local dishes).
