Near the town clock and just a few metres from the little square at Agios Georgios’s church – a particularly charming corner of the town of Poros – you will discover a carnivore’s heaven. This is the famous Dimitris Family Taverna, where Dimitris and his wife and their 9 children have been grilling excellent meats and serving wonderful appetisers since 1980.
Dimitris began his career as a butcher with a tiny eatery next to his butcher’s shop, which he later moved across the street and into a building with a splendid view over the Bay of Poros and the sunset. Here he has created a spacious taverna with a beautiful wooden ceiling decorated with portraits of the heroes of the Revolution of 1821 and an enormous black and white photo of the good ship Pindos in the straits of Poros in the 1960s. In summer, the large windows in the dining room open to make it a semi-outdoor space, but tables are also set on the pavement so that Dimitris’s customers can enjoy their meals while drinking in the peace of a charming Poros neighbourhood.
They can choose from a selection of steaks, milk-fed veal chops, pork chops, filet mignon, T- Bone, sirloin, Porterhouse, steak tartare, pork fillet, liver, spit-roasted lamb, chicken thighs, turkey, spare ribs, lamb chops, skewered beef or pork (souvlaki) and, of course, homemade sausages. As if all this were not enough, the menu also features slow-cooked casseroles and baked classics such as vegetables stewed in olive oil, ‘soutzoukakia’ (cumin-scented meatballs in tomato sauce, moussaka and other delicacies like char-grilled vegetables with cheese, fried courgettes with garlic sauce, fried aubergines with tomato sauce and much more.
Dimitris Family Taverna is the best place to eat meat and the most family-friendly taverna in the whole of the Argo-Saronic gulf.
