Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”
Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” (AIA), one of the most modern and functional airports in the world, is a pioneer Public-Private Partnership scheme, established in 1996, which begun its operations in March 28th, 2001 marking the onset of a new era for air transport in Greece.
Throughout the 15 years of its operations, AIA has been internationally acknowledged and awarded with numerous accolades and distinctions for its leading value-adding top notch services. Today it constitutes one of the major gateways to South-Eastern Europe and one of the biggest employment engines in Greece. Over 13,000 people are employed in the wider airport community, consisting of more than 300 companies closely connected to AIA. The airport contributes to the national economy by 2.63% of the GDP (Athens University of Economics and Business, 2013).
During its 15 years of successful operations the airport has served more than 218 million passengers through 2.7 million flights, and offers its airline partners one of the most innovative and integrated incentives programmes to ensure the sustainability and further growth of both domestic and international traffic. AIA, however, is far more than just a gateway, with the objective to grow continuously, exploiting, at the same time, its extensive real estate assets, conducting large-scale commercial activities and exporting the Company’s pioneering know-how in the IT sector.
Besides its aeronautical and non-aeronautical activity, AIA always remains committed to its role as a “cultural” hub, with an extensive “Art & Culture” programme, as well as to its role as a responsible corporate citizen, introducing and implementing a range of programmes, actions and special CR initiatives for society at large, with a special focus on its neighbouring local communities.
