Laographic Workshop of the Municipality of Ermionida
The reputation of the Laographic Workshop of the Municipality of Ermionida preceded us wherever we went in the area and asked questions concerning the traditions and gastronomy of Ermionida.
It didn’t take long before we made an appointment at the centre in order to find out more about the activities of the women who belong to this association, secretly hoping that they would give us a rare local recipe or two.
All of the members turned up to welcome us and they were beautifully organized as well.
Pots were bubbling on the stove, frying pans were smoking and the pastry experts were rolling out fine sheets of phyllo.
The one dish we had asked them to show us had been translated into a much broader lesson on the foods of Ermionida in general.
We were overwhelmed. By their valuable material but especially by the unique atmosphere of close collaboration and the joy of creativity. We took photographs, we learned a lot, and we had a wonderful time for hours on end.
As they told us:
“Our group was formed out of love for this region, for the purpose of studying its history and folk culture, but also to revive old customs, the culture and way of life. We take an activepart in the cultural events of the area and most important of all, the workshop has become a meeting place where people can get together, making the district of Ermioni better for us and for visitors.
Volunteerism is a subject that touches us all. It is an exceptional educational endeavour that strengthens social solidarity, reinforces active engagement and coexistence, offering new content to our life. It combines “the love of the amateur, the reliability of the professional, the discipline of the soldier and the selflessness of the best human beings”.
