Every place has both its stylish eateries, new arrivals that freshen up and revitalize the restaurant scene, and the old favourites that represent the values of the good old days. To Limani (The Port), better known as Tis Kyra Katinas, at Aigiali, belongs to the second category. No matter how many years have gone by, her taverna has kept its standards as high as the day it opened. That was back in the 1980s, which makes it one of the island’s oldest. It is also among the most famous and has a host of devoted fans. In those days Amorgos had no electricity, no road existed between Aigiali and Katapolo, and the visitors were mainly students or hippies. In that carefree and unconventional time, there were very few other establishments, and sooner or later everyone passed through Kyra Katina’s taverna.
The tourists, Greeks and foreigners, soon discovered that Katina would help them with much more than a good meal. In her garden, she had water, showers and toilets, which made her very popular. They used to call her ‘Mummy’and teased friends who couldn’t go on holiday with taunts like “You’re in Athens, we’re at Katina’s”. Since then 40 years have gone by and the running of the taverna of the Nomikos family – which hails from Potamos, the smallest hamlet in the Aigiali area – has been taken over by Katina and Antonis’ boys, Panagiotis and Thodoris, and their wives.
The taverna is situated in a quiet flower-filled lane lined with oleanders behind the waterfront. The building has a spacious, tastefully decorated dining room with an open kitchen. On its walls hang dozens of photographs and paintings of the island. The kitchen turns out a large variety of dishes, featuring Amorgos specialities such as greens pies with wild chard and herbs, octopus pie with traditional phyllo, octopus carpaccio with olives and coriander, fava fritters, local meat with potatoes or stewed with tomatoes, and grilled fish, fish soup and spaghetti with lobster.
To Limani tis Kyra Katinas is open every day from 8 am till evening almost all year round.
