Lafazani Winery

The Lafazani Winery I did not know. The reason was that it was located outside the central core of Nemea, so it was impossible to see it as a passer-by, as the facilities of the Lafazani winery are located in the village Ancient Cleons at Nemea of Corinth. The second reason was that Spyros Lafazanis did not give much basis in communication and public relations, a job that was recently undertaken by his daughter Athena and in fact with great success, proving the creation of the excellent website of the winery. Because indeed few know that Spyros Lafazanis is the largest wine producer in Nemea and is in the top ten in the country.

The Lafazani Winery covers an area of 4.000 sq.m. which is surrounded by 100 acres of privately owned vineyards. The Nemea Winery employs a total of 35 employees, and can receive 200 tons of grapes daily. The production capacity of the Winery is 4.000 tons per year of which 2.500 tons are channeled in bags, 1.500 tons in bottled wine and the rest to friends winemakers, while 15% of production is exported.

We met Spyros Lafazanis at his winery, where after tasting his wines and visiting the facilities, he showed us with great pride, the new machine, a huge tractor, which does the harvesting on its own and with an automatic system collects the healthy rogues. Drinking the classic together Nemea Lafazani, Spyros told us about his passions:

«My principle is to use the most modern and reliable winemaking methods throughout the production process. The equipment of the winery includes the most modern technological winemaking machines. The tractor you saw is the first to acquire a winery in Greece. The history of our winery has its roots 70 years ago, when my father Vassilios Lafazanis started making wine in Piraeus. Several years later, in 1960, the family's first privately owned winery was created in Magoula, Attica, which was later transformed into a public limited company. In 1993 I moved the production to Nemea, a place I had especially loved as a young oenologist. 90% of the needs of our winery are covered by 300 winegrowers from an area of 2000 acres. The company monitors the cultivation of the vineyards, is in constant contact with the partner viticulturists, advises them and advises them on the use of cultivation techniques. In our 100 acres that will soon become 250 we will do our experimental series».

Spyros Lafazanis is moving forward relentlessly and prepares the ground for the new generation of his family - and his three children in the profession - who wherever they go will learn to ride to take the reins at some point. Until then, Spyros, anxious, will innovate and dare on a daily basis.
