Ouzo Karagiannis

Entering the Varvakeio Market from the main entrance of Athinas Street, and proceeding on the left side, at about fifty meters, you reach Korakis Fish Shop, which belongs to the Nestor of Psaragora, Spyros Korakis, for many years president of fishmongers and a great connoisseur of the work. In his shop, in the corner, a narrow gallery begins vertically. Right there, opposite Korakis, is the Ouzo Karagiannis in Varvakeio.

The ouzo bar, a space three and a half meters wide and another five meters deep, has been serving the customers of the Agora for four decades, entertaining the hunger of its people, and creating an atmosphere of joy and satisfaction in the buying public. A narrow wall bench welcomes visitors - those who manage to catch a stall on the beer barrels that have been turned into bar stools -, because in the ouzo room it is difficult to fit more than ten nomads standing.

The others, standing in the corridor, wait to arrest their passing friends and treat them to sea bream.

The ouzo Karagiannis or else of Kyr-George not famous for its many options. The appetizers are few and exquisite and they accompany tsipouro, ouzo or beer. The cost of the drink is 3.30 euros (VAT and municipal fees included!) And with it a saucer, with slices of bread, as a reward and on them the irresistible meatballs, sausage, tomato, pepper. If the company is two people then both appetizers come in a larger saucer. Now, as the tsipouro infestation progresses, the appetizers (varieties are called) are slightly renewed, with dolmadas, saganaki cheese, crayfish. But all the money is meatball which has been made in the same way for forty years - a secret political recipe - since the time when the then 28-year-old George received the store from the old owners Vrachnakis and Christakis, but Cretans from the city. Mr. George remembers with nostalgia the moment they handed over to him - now old and tired from work - the store with the term "To be able to come two or three hours every day so as not to lose touch with life".

Ο Sun-George Karagiannis he is happy because his two lads Costas and Apostolos, 36 and 37 years old respectively, have taken over the job and every day - days when the market is working - from 8.00 to 15.00 they serve the people. And he in turn helps his children, but most of all he is in life!
