Tetramythos Winery

Tetramythos Winery

Tetramythos is the name of the winery-estate in the place of the same name at Ano Diakofto in the mountains of Aigialeia in the northwest Peloponnese. The company vineyards cover 14,000 hectares at an altitude of 450-1050 meters and are cultivated organically, in other words using only those chemical fertilizers and pesticides traditionally permitted, such as copper and sulfur. The unique climate of the area, the soil, the effect of the breeze from the Gulf of Corinth, as well as meticulous vine-tending techniques create grapes of exceptional quality.

We took a rather nerve-wracking tour of the vineyards by 4 × 4 over horrifying dirt roads, with Stathis Stratis at the wheel, one of the two brothers who own the company. And discovered glorious hidden vineyards planted with both native and international varieties: Roditis, Malagouzia, Mavro Kalavrytino, Agiorgitiko, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, with Mavro Kalavrytino the most important.

The winemaking of these varieties takes place in the state of the art winery that also happens to have been built in absolute harmony with the environment and the wines have been awarded PDO and PGI status. The tasteful production space, atmospheric cellars and a lovely tasting room complete the picture.

Situated on the Aigio-Kalvryta road not far from the Ano Diakofto junction, the winery attracts many passers-by along with dedicated wine lovers.

Its most important wines are:

Mavro Kalavrytino (17,000 bottles)

The only wine in Greece made from this unblended local variety has a rounded, delicious flavor, with a freshness combined with considerable complexity. It is also very fruity with notes of cherry and spices and a mild tannin finish.

Retsina Tetramythos Organic Wine

A wine whose aroma of retsina is very smooth, while Roditis declares its presence with a lemony perfume consisting of citrus, pear and melon. The resin added at the start of fermentation is collected from the pines of the region, while 40% of the wine is fermented in clay amphorae - as in ancient times - something that is very innovative for Greece though it is becoming fashionable elsewhere. Other wines include Muscat Sec Blanc Nature, a typical Moschato with an aroma of rose petal Turkish delight, Malagouzia Tetramythos, with fruity aromas and notes of basil and thyme, barrel-aged Sauvignon Tetramythos with a grapefruit aroma and sharp acidity that adds depth, barrel -aged Cabernet Sauvignon, Agiorgitiko and Mavrodaphne.
