CULTURE LANDSCAPES

The landscapes of each place as perceived by locals and visitors -their visual characteristics and character- are the result of the influence of natural and cultural (human) factors.

"The landscape is the projection of the soul of every people on matter"

wrote o Odysseus Elytis in "Public and Private".

Ο civilization is therefore the focus in shaping the space and the landscape and therefore all landscapes are cultural.

Until the middle of the 20th century, during the popular culture before the advent and domination of the industrial age, the natural and structured landscape of the country, mainly on the islands and in non-urban centers, was mainly concerned with the production and processing of food.

Windmills and watermills, pigeons, presses and flax, hemp and wineries, olive presses, but also structures used to transport food, such as boats, barrels, pots or baskets, are parts of gastronomic culture of the country.

The vineyards of Santorini, Nemea or Naoussa, the lagoon of Messolonghi, the olive grove of Amfissa and the lentil fields of Englouvi in Lefkada, the bean fields in Prespes, the mansions with their protected citrus gardens Plain in Chios are some samples of typical landscapes that bear the stamp of their crops.

The archeological or folklore museums of Greece with the variety of ceramic utensils, the specialized Olive Museums of the Cultural Foundation of Piraeus Bank in Sparta and in Lesvos, or several museums in wineries like his Koutsogiannopoulou at Santorini, of Boutari or Gerovassiliou in Macedonia, are places where the visitor forms a clear picture of the history of oil and wine.

All these Attractions (local festivals, landscapes, buildings, museums) will be included in gastronomic portfolio of each region and will complete the image of its gastronomy.
