Museum of Industrial Olive Oil of Lesvos

The Museum of Industrial Olive Oil of Lesvos housed in olive mill of Agia Paraskevi and became known as the "Public engine" and was a pioneering initiative of the early 20th century.

His idea Community olive mill It came from a group of small and medium-sized producers, who, influenced by the spirit of communism and the support of the Saints of the Diaspora, proceeded to establish it in 1910 as a "rival awe" to private olive mills. The mill operated from 1911 to 1967 and the proceeds were used to support the social and educational work of the community of Agia Paraskevi.

In 1967 the mill finally closed as the dictatorship arrested most of the members of the community council.

In 1985 as part of the effort to save its industrial buildings Lesbos, the space was turned into a Multicenter. In 2004, the use of the building is granted by the Municipality of Agia Paraskevi to Piraeus Group Cultural Foundation, in order to create the Museum of Industrial Olive Oil of Lesvos.

The Museum of Industrial Olive Oil of Lesvos seeks to promote the industrial heritage, both in the field of olive oil and in the wider field of technology.

The Agia Paraskevi complex is emerging as a "museum of itself", with the restoration of architectural and mechanical elements in their historical form. The surviving historical equipment, which has been restored, stands out exemplary, through its support with digital productions.

In the main building, emphasis is placed on the three basic stages of the olive oil production process (crushing of the fruit, compression of the olive paste, separation of the oil from the water) and reference is made to the complementary operation of the flour mill.

The small olive warehouses (bates) function as additional exhibitions, which display daily moments of olive cultivation and oil processing with an emphasis on the human element.

The Museum of Industrial Olive Oil of Lesvos also includes a multipurpose room, a canteen, as well as a small outdoor amphitheater, located next to an excellent exposure of impressive oil jars!

Tied to the local community as it is often used for the events of the inhabitants of Agia Paraskevi, the Museum of Industrial Olive Oil of Lesvos is a jewel for the island and one of the most beautiful industrial museums in Greece.
