Margiora, an impressive arrival in Kythnos

Η Kythnos, although so close to the capital, is in a nutshell, the Cycladic island of absolute simplicity and peace. Its harmonious landscapes, numerous and beautiful beaches, picturesque settlements, impressive natural landscapes offer travelers this unique feeling of tranquility.

She is the protagonist in the journey along the island the dry stones of which they are famous for their plasticity as well as their role in organizing the space and forming the cultivable land strips, the so-called terraces or terraces.

The two large well-preserved settlements h Country and Oak they have a beginning and an end and immediately after the fields begin, the estates forming a balance of settlement and countryside clear and very beautiful. Whitewashed plates everywhere and at every opportunity many pots with herbs.

Of course, the most peculiar element of the settlements are the painted paving of ordinary women, who steal the heart, having an abstraction and an expressive graphic design!

The sponge is the ambassador of Kythnio cuisine and the right things are done by sour cheese (as they say in Chora) or unsalted or fresh (as they say in Dryopida). It looks like mizithra, but it is made from goat's milk and not from whey and it is much tastier; It is probably the most delicious cheese of the Cyclades, its descendant Kythniou Tyros which had excited so many gourmets of Antiquity (Aristotle, Diogenes Laertius, Pliny, etc.).

In my previous travels from a gastronomic point of view, I had singled it out "Paper Boat" where Alexandros Aggelis and Aphrodite Lymperopoulou converted an old cafe in Dryopida and built a very good restaurant, and “Ofiousa” of Giannis Collaros who for twenty-five years left his jobs in Athens and came to find his health on the island!

The new arrival on the island is an ambitious endeavor, the restaurant - wine bar - delicatessen "Margiora" located in Chora of Kythnos and housed in an imposing mansion of 1866 that was the home of Margiora (Maria) Vlastari, a powerful woman and emblematic presence in the life of Kythnos during the first half of the 20th century - and aunt of Fontas, one of of the two partners.

Margiora, Kythnos

Fontas and Michalis in 2020 completely restored this exceptional building as well as its external spaces, restoring it to its original form, fully respecting the original form and layout of the building. For example, the old kitchen of the house now houses the kitchen of "Margiora". The store serves its guests in its 2 courtyards as well as in the square in front of the property.

"Margiora" sets its tables for breakfast from 9.30 to 14.00. Then it serves dinner from 19.00 in the afternoon until 00.30, emphasizing the Greek quality bottled wine, where in collaboration with sommelier Aris Sklavenitis proposes a wide range of Greek vineyards, giving the necessary emphasis on Cycladic production.

The central philosophy of Margiora's cuisine, both at breakfast and dinner, is the emphasis on quality and traditional Cycladic raw materials and flavors attributed in a modern and creative way, closer to the modern public.

Among other dishes we singled out:

Trima of Kythnos, mint pesto and tomato,

Lousa Tinos, peach, rosemary and goat cheese,

Along with the dinner and during the evening hours of its operation, "Margiora" offers a complete list of cocktails and spirits, which has been edited by Panos Kanatsoulis. Finally, during all the opening hours of the store, it operates inside the house (in the old "Sunday hall" that has been configured accordingly) and a small delicatessen with products of selected small Greek producers where the visitor can get many of the products he enjoyed at the table of.

Wishes for good cooking and calm summer!
