Apple candy
That's it apple candy (from pumpkin, honey and almonds) is the most characteristic dessert of the island, the dessert of the spoon which were traditionally used in engagements and weddings, as honey symbolizes the sweet life of the couple, while almonds symbolize fertility.
In the past, every family made its own - the same happens today - but nowadays there are home-made companies that specialize in its production, such as the Ark of Tastes in Pollonia or the Traditional dishes of Panagiotis Vihos in Adamas.
The development of tourism in Milos, created a demand so that the visitor of Milos prefers to buy products of maleic land, such as sweet candy, capers, cheese, pulp, pasta. This is mainly due to the fact that many taverns offer them to their customers and they, in turn, buy them from the gas stations, wanting to keep the taste of the holidays when they allow it at home or to offer them as souvenirs to their own people.
Apple Candy - Recipe
Milos dragee is produced from the local white pumpkin (differs from the classic red), which, after maturing, is cut and left for a whole year in specially ventilated areas to dry, to drain the liquids and to leave the fat. Then the pumpkin is cut, cleaned of seeds and its flesh is cut into sticks. Then the pieces are put in a pot on high heat where together with water, honey, sugar boil for 60 minutes until melted and just before the end add the almonds and lemon juice. When the dessert is dry, it is placed in sterile glass jars. It is served as a dessert and is pleasantly accompanied by yogurt or ice cream.
