Solomos Winery

Η Solomos family came from Sitia in Crete in 1600 and has associated its name with the creation of wine on its island Zakynthos since the beginning of 1900. The Solomos Winery today it is located at the foot of the Venetian Castle of Zakynthos and was started to be built, based on traditional architectural standards, in the early 80s, by the owners Anastasios and Dionysios Solomos.

In recent years it has been taken over by the next generation, who, respecting the traditions and what they learned from their parents, develop and produce PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) wines from native grape varieties. THE Konstantina Solomou, daughter of Anastasios, who, having studied oenology, makes the wine using modern winemaking methods and develops the wines of the winery, her brother John Solomos, deals with engineering support, standardization, tanks, bottling and packaging, while their cousin, and he is John (of Dionysios) deals with the customer sector and distribution.

The varieties that the family makes are mainly Augustian -perhaps the most famous variety of Zakynthos-, Gustolidi, Pavlos, Skiadopoulos, Robola Lefki, Moschato, Violeto and Black Robola.

Annual production is 100-120 thousand bottles.

In the large, elegant tasting room with its long wooden tables illuminated by the abundant light pouring in from the windows, we tried a Amount of 2021 (from 100% Augustiatis variety a red dry wine with body and aroma, included by James Suckling, one of the most famous wine critics in the world in the annual Report on the wines of Greece with a grade of 92 out of 100 ), a Campanario of 2021 (dry white wine that got 90 points out of 100) and a RAINBOW (white sweet wine vintage 2019) which is also drunk as an aperitif, leaving a delicious sweet taste of fruit and aromas.

At the table across from us, he opens the wines for the tasting Konstantina Solomou, a beautiful young girl who grew up close to her father next to wine and having learned all his secrets, passionately transfers her knowledge and love to winemaking.

«This is what I learned to do, and I said, since this is my destiny, I will do it to the best of my ability».

And apparently it does, as evidenced by the many awards, such as the last one in April 2022 at the 22nd Thessaloniki International Wine and Spirits Competition the wine VERDEA P.G.E. was awarded the bronze medal. VERDEA, this traditional white wine from Zakynthos with intense aromas of citrus fruits, white flowers and herbs, owes its name to the Italian word Verde which means green, referring to the green color of unripe grapes.

Solomos Winery can be visited (by appointment), Konstantina will show you around its premises, tell you about its history and you will taste the fine wines of the Solomos family. A part of Zakynthos that is worth getting to know.
