The tavern of Psara in Plaka Leonidi

Η "Fisherman's tavern" is located a short distance (4 km) from Leonidio in Kinuria, in the beautiful Plaka, in the port of Leonidio, a small seaside settlement with a picturesque harbor and a nice sandy beach. To get there, you cross the plain where the Tsakonian aubergines are grown. A fertile valley, a blessed place, with good soil and plenty of water, protected by impressively crimson rocky hills, is the homeland of the Tsakonian eggplant. Wanted in the market for its exquisite sweet taste and the privilege of not needing to peel or clean its skin before frying, the Leonid Tsakonian eggplant is among the 100+ Greek PDO products.

In Plaka in 1902, in a stone house, operated for the first time the "fisherman's tavern", the first tavern of Plaka by grandfather Thrasyvoulos. It met its development in the 70's, with Constantine, father of Nikos (the current owner), who was fishing with his boat, and his mother Peace who put the first stews.

Ο Nikos Smyros built a larger boat, the "Armenian", and with him he arranges and brings small fish and fish dolls. A huge wall with photos displays his trophies!

The "Tavern of the Fisherman" is here since 1902, on the pebble beach of Plaka and next to the springs of the holy Monastery of Agios Nikolaos Sintzas.

Nikos Smyros, a diligent fisherman and roaster, does not pull any force, to clean the potatoes of the day, on the window, overlooking Myrtos and his boat the Armenian. And of course he is available for conversation, because the work is mechanical. Potato peeling, sea view, small talk… The ultimate psychotherapy!

And after he does his homework with the potatoes - since he has already delivered the fish to her in the morning Mrs. Eleni - Nikos will drink his ouzo with his friends.

Boiled salad with tsakonika products. Greens, beans, zucchini and potatoes drowned in Tsakonian olive oil. And then the red mullets that will be eaten by hand.

Eleni cooks the Tsakonian aubergines in many ways. Shoes with onion and tomato in the oven, patty with eggplant and gruyere, fries with red sauce and other five or six recipes.

The all time classic dish: fried tsakoni eggplant with tomato sauce.
