Kapetaneika 2023, celebration of seafaring and Parian gastronomy

The "Captain Girl" is an institution that mainly involves a struggle edisplay of wooden sailing boats in memory of the architect Kostas Gouzelis who lived and worked for more than forty years in Naoussa, Paros, leaving important architectural works, artistic creations (visual arts, films) and intense memories in the hearts of the people of the island.

One by one, the beautiful wooden sailing boats gathered in the port of Naoussa. First and best n Always, of Samos registry, the proud boat, perama, of the legendary captain Linardos of Naoussa, which now travels as an excursion boat in the seas of Samos.

The "old wolf" captain of the Cyclades Dimitris Rizos , "with my friend Rizo, I armenize the Aegean” (his singer Nikos Oikonomidis).

Dimitris Rizos' ultra-elegant and low-key trehantiri Anemoyannis, "and with Anemogiannis who is storming he doesn't catch him" (always from Economides).

One by one, the boats are re-opening in the sea.

Wooden boats, wooden motorboats, boats, fishing boats, excursion boats, boats without sails, inflatable speedboats also participated, offering non-competitors the opportunity to capture the beautiful images of the race either in their memory or on their memory cards. Because apart from the finish, for the spectators the rest of the race is not interesting because they are far away.

The idea was for the spectators to travel close to the competitors, to admire the hulls as they cut through the water, to hear the noise of the sails and sails. 'But when people plan the gods are smiling! The day of the race was absolute apnoea, and finally after a desperate wait for the least bit of wind, the race was abandoned. And competitors  they took revenge and they had the best swim of the summer, diving in the Mediterranean!

For the first time the Captains joined so much gastronomy in their ritual. As can be seen in "menu" of the captains, the following were cooked by dozens of volunteer cooks: Tomato meatballs, caper salad, scallion salad, eggplant salad, string beans with garlic, Parian chickpeas, grilled mushrooms, grilled corn with butter and salt, fava beans, omelette, cayenne potatoes, mashed potatoes with eggs ( bouleria), potato salad, grilled fur, stuffed octopus, grilled sardines, clam patellida, mussels with vegetables.

We didn't miss the alipasta, macaroni kofto with red cuttlefish, barley with wine red octopus, the berger with grilled fur. As for sweets, watermelon with tulumotiri, halva and rice milk was served, while at dawn the drunkard's risotto was served.

The serving started at 8.00 and at 10.00 the awarding took place and after the volunteers danced, the food continued with greater flow. Until the early hours of the morning, the serving was constantly renewed and enriched until the dawn (around 06:00) when the drunkard's pilaf also came out...
"The central idea of the culinary evening was not to have one central food (the kurbani-boiled or the wedding pilaf)) as in religious festivals, but various flavors with local products and traditional but also fresher cooking methods. Let the suma, the wine, the beer be styled and let the dances continue! And all this with stable but successive flavors! (supplements by Argiros Petropoulos)

Ο Sebastian cooked black-eyed beans, chickpeas, smoked fish and parsley.

The pans alternately cook courgettes, potatoes, tomato meatballs, etc.

It should be noted that all the above foods were offered free of charge by the volunteers' cooking!

The preparation area, at the start of the event before reinforcements arrive.

Based on the comments of the organizers, this year's Captain's Games were the most successful at least as far as the land events are concerned and especially the culinary event on Saturday which included the awarding of prizes for participation in the competitive part, since in the end there were no winners and scores due to apnea. The guests estimated to have been served must reach 3.000, since the main serving started at 8.00 and ended at 12.00.

The dances lasted until 7.00 on Sunday morning, while the festive atmosphere had spread throughout the port, as can be seen from the image above, where the members of the Bronze Agia Fanfara, stir up the patrons of the old port of Naoussa.

And next year and good rest to the tens-hundreds of Naoussa volunteer organizers who demonstrated once again their swagger and their competitive spirit!

PS I welcome additional information, - because due to my injured back, I didn't have the familiar penetration and mobility, let alone went to bed from 12.00 due to pain - in order to fill in any omissions!
