Matina

The tavern of Matina and Stavros

One of its most beautiful villages Naxos is Koronos, located 30 km from Chora. Built at an altitude of between five hundred and six hundred meters, in a valley with springs that run even in summer, rich vegetation of fruit trees, olives, walnuts and plane trees, Koronos recalls the good days of the early 20th century that had a population over two thousand inhabitants. It was then the first emery village of Naxos, when the emery Koronos was a world-sought-after ore, with very difficult mining conditions, but it distributed rich earnings to the emery workers who worked there.

Today, there are few inhabitants left in the village, the emery is gone and most of the houses are safe in winter. Koronos nevertheless, in winter and summer has an oasis of life, because in the heart of the village, in a fairytale environment, drowned in flowers and greenery and next to the stone fountain, is hidden the beautiful tavern of Matina and Stavros. The Sun-Cross grows his own vegetables in his garden, has his own animals and of course cheese, As the sour cream, the male, the cream cheese and wine from the local varieties Potamisi and Rozako.

ΤThe dishes that Matina prepares are many and delicious, cooked (pork lemonade, braised goat, moussaka, oily, stuffed zucchini, etc.) and in the evening bake on the embers. Famous are the french fries and the wonderful lamb lemonade with dill. The pies are delicious, the locals -the sefuklotes- with celery and fennel, and the pumpkin pies with zucchini, onion and fennel (fennel is watered in the garden of Kyr-Stavros and lasts all year round). Of course the divine taste is in the dessert, in the pan with the millefeuille-version of Matina.

Η Mrs. Matina, thirty-five years married to Sun-Cross, with three children and two grandchildren, is the heart of the tavern. Immovable and omnipresent, she offers her warm smile to Greeks and foreigners, sitting at the tables of her tavern. And when you ask her how she does not get tired, she answers disarmingly:

"Well, what fatigue? "Ten months of loneliness, you do not know how eagerly we wait in the summer to see people, for people to come, to take care of them and for them to leave happy and full".
