Boutari Winery in Skalani

The Boutari winery in Crete is built outside the village Staircase, at the Fantaxometocho estate at a distance of just 8 km from the city center of Heraklion and is the jewel of the Archanes viticultural zone.

The Fantaxometocho estate or "share of ghosts", owes its name to the efforts of its former owner to save it from pirate raids, spreading that the estate is inhabited by ghosts.

From the Skalani estate, where 100.000 bottles of wine are produced annually, 4 wines and the lion's share is held by Skalani, a PGI wine. from the varieties 50% Kotsifali, 50% Syrah.

The Staircase is one of the leading wines of the Boutari company and has received many important international awards. It matures for 12 months in oak barrels, as a result of which the aromas of red forest fruits, sweet aging aromas such as cinnamon, clove and cocoa dominate.

The Fantaxo shareholder is a P.G.E. white wine from varieties where Malvasia Aromatica 25% blended harmoniously with the cosmopolitan Chardonnay 60% and the fruity Vilana 15%, maturing for 3 months in oak barrels with aromas of lemon, pineapple and vanilla flowers.

The White wine from the variety Moschato Spinas characterized by the aromas and flavors of citrus, honey blossom and dried apricot.

The Liatiko sweet wine comes from the red indigenous variety "liatiko" that is found mainly in Crete and has its roots in antiquity. It gives us dry wines, high quality, with intense red color, but also sun-dried sweets with rich aroma and full flavor. After the "drying" of the grapes, which lasts about 10 days, the white vinification is applied which develops very slowly, and then the ripening takes place for 3 years in oak barrels.

At the winery, the rich wine cellar and a special projection room are waiting for us for a unique trip to history of Crete.

In the spring of 2015, the Boutari winery, proceeding to enter into a partnership with Aria Hotels, created the Scalani Hills Residences consisting of three luxury homes surrounded by 70 acres of vineyard.

The Boutari Winery in Skalani is one of the six wineries owned by the company Boutari - one of the historic wineries in Greece founded in 1879 by Ioannis Boutari - in some of the most important wine-producing areas of Greece (Naoussa, Goumenissa, Crete, Santorini, Mantineia and Attica) and that its wide range of products is successfully exported to international markets.
