The prefecture of Laconia is the southernmost prefecture of the Peloponnese and mainland Greece. It is bathed by the Aegean Sea (Myrto Sea), the Messinian Gulf and the Laconian Gulf. It has two main mountain ranges, Taygetos which is the highest peak of the Peloponnese (2.407 meters) and Parnon (1.961 meters). Between them is the valley of the river Evrotas and Sparta. It borders on the north with the prefecture of Arcadia and on the west with the prefecture of Messinia. The inhabited island of Peloponnese, Elafonisos, also belongs to the prefecture of Laconia.
