Oven of Giora

Ο oven of Gioras located in the neighborhood Lakh and dates from the 17th century. It is the oldest operating oven of Mykonos and is called Gioras (George in the Mykonian dialect), by its old owner and father of today, Nikos Vamvakouris.

This oven has been in the Vamvakouris family for over two centuries.

The oven is in the alley Ignatius Basioula and, as it does not stand out from the rest of the typical Mykonian houses, nothing visually warns you of its existence. Only when you get close, you will be flooded with tickles smells of bread that just comes out of the wood oven and will lead you to a humble door to find yourself in a surprise.

The oven of Gioras is housed in an impressively tall stone building with thick walls and wooden beams for the ceiling, but because it is underground it is not visible from anywhere. After passing the first two rooms, which only in 2015 were basically designed by Gioras the youngest (grandson of Gioras and son of Mr. Nikos), you are led to the heart of the oven, where the kneader and the wood oven which still works with rusks and wood.

It comes out of this oven every day traditional bread and nuts, but also Easter rolls and Christmas bread of Christmas.

Mr. Nikos, a kind and down-to-earth man, never lost his sense of humor with the housewives and ladies who waited patiently to get the coveted loaf.

I still remember and laugh at the attack of an old woman: "Down with your hands, find Giora, since with your floured hands you leave traces everywhere, you want us to find trouble!".

Gioras the Younger made a light operation in the area, without disturbing the highly aesthetic carcass at all:

"Yes, the building is beautiful and the whole process, the lighting of the oven, the kneading, the baking. But selling only bread and rusks did not make a living. Now with the various pies, and with the small cafe we ​​made, the foreigners who visit us often can relax and enjoy the spectacle and we can have an additional income".
