Kyveli House - Exhibition Space

Η Kyveli House in Ermoupolis of Syros - an urban house of 1870 - and the its showroom, are the two buildings where the Kyveli Institute hosts the "Research, Documentation and Hosting Center".

Having his neighborhood on their back Thunder - built by Chian sailors and merchants who flood Ermoupolis after the massacre of Chios, create trading houses, raise the church of the Resurrection of the Lord, awaiting the Resurrection of the Nation and adore the theater - and face the sea, Church of Agios Nikolaos and deep in the sea where the first lighthouse of the Aegean has been flashing since 1844, the Kyveli Institute is a non-profit legal entity under private law.

The Kyveli Institute was founded in 1999 with the aim of saving, researching, utilizing and highlighting historical material related to the Greek and European theater of the 20th century, through the life and work of the great protagonist Kyveli and her family.

Ermoupolis of Syros was chosen as the seat of the Kyvelis Institute why in Apollo Theater in 1904 Kyveli, 16 years old, appears for the first time next to her husband Mitso Myrat with the troupe of Konstantinos Christomanos. The marble capital of the Aegean, a bourgeois city of the 19th century is a connecting link of the entire Greek Diaspora and the Apollo Theater, inaugurated in 1864 and built to the standards of Italian lyric theaters - in the image of La Scala in Milan - becomes the center of a theatrical and civil as new works are written or foreign translated and played here.

The founding members of the Institute are Kyveli Theochari - Zografidis, Michalis Makroulakis, Thanos Mikroutsikos, Alexandros Myrat, Adamantios Pepelasis, Petros Potamianos and Valentini Stefanidi-Potamianou, Kyveli's great-granddaughter, current president.

Soul of the Institute h Valentini Stefanidi - Potamianou who together with her loving mother Kyveli Theochari - Zografidis (1924) actress and for years director of Public Relations of the Private Office of Andreas Papandreou in the years 1981-89 and 1993-99 of Costas Simitis, daughter of the protagonist Mirandas Myrat and Spyrou Theochari and Kyveli's granddaughter, for the past 15 years or so, have presented dozens of exhibitions and events that have enriched the cultural horizon of Syros.

The Kyveli House It is a magical place, because it transports you to the aristocratic atmosphere of the early 20th century while at the same time it functions as an experiential museum, as an elegant theatrical stage where performances of the holy everyday life take place. The entrance of Kyveli House has the initials K and P (Kyveli-Papandreou) engraved to remind the visitor of the great love of Kyveli, this exuberant woman with the late George Papandreou who walked with him for 20 years, to finally marry him in 1939.

In the adjacent Exhibition, the photo gallery, the film library, Kyveli's personal correspondence, a dress, a gift from Venizelos and hundreds of other valuable items, very well presented with the help of a theatrical tour, will take you to dream worlds that will be difficult to leave.
