Syros Winery - Nikos Hatzakis

Nikos Hatzakis

The 2011 the Syros acquired a winery again, the Syros Winery who did not try to continue the production of Syrian bottled wine that had stopped in 2001. Who does not remember in the 90's when white bottled wine was produced from the vineyards of the estate of the shipowner Vati - with oenologist Panos Zoumboulis - who had also planted international varieties and had taken care of the institutionalization of the "Syrian Local Wine" from Chardonnay and Assyrtiko. This story, however, stopped relatively quickly due to the death of its creator and the lack of interest from the heirs. Thus, for some years, the island remained with the local wine, high with the dark yellow-pink color and the very intense taste.

Creator of the Syros Winery o Nikos Hatzakis, a young oenologist and even younger winemaker. Born in Athens, originally from Lesvos, after his studies he worked as an oenologist for Spyropoulos and Boutaris, then for 7 years at the Kraft Brewery and in 2011 he decided to make wine and live in Syros.

The result of this selection is a puppet winery, capable of producing 16.000 bottles and three very interesting wines.

In Syros Winery located in the area of Lagada in Talanta, on the road leading to Galissa and Delagratsia, Nikos the first wine he made was the white Fabric, is a cool, fresh fruity white wine (notes of juicy peaches, pears, pineapple) produced from a blend of local varieties, Monemvasia and white Kountoura.

In 2014 the "Like the Marathas»- name from the Muscovite fenugreeks that are native and grow everywhere in Syros, from the mountains and the gorges, to the shore. This wine from the variety Assyrtiko is very different from her Santorini and brings to the island its own self, the notes of citrus and some suspicion of orange blossoms with the parallel freshness, acidity and minerality of the variety.

Finally his third wine h red Fabric from the local Mandilaria, is a light and cool red wine, with mild aromas of cherry, vanilla and tomato. Probably the softest and most pleasant Mandilaria of the Aegean, that Nikos managed to tame the tannins and the wildness of this awkward variety.

The Syros winery belongs to the "big and small" of the Aegean and we can only wish him good luck.
