Afianes Winery

Afianes Winery

The Afianes Winery was created in 1997 on Raches Ikaria and in September 2007 was inaugurated as a modern winery in Prophet Elias Rachon.

Built of stone, very tasteful, in a vineyard at an altitude of 610m. in the middle of a pine forest, with a traditional pythostasi (pits buried in the ground to receive the must) next to a specially designed small theater and with the areas of winemaking, bottling, maturation and storage in cave buildings, Afianes Winery is an excellent proposal for those who want to taste the wines of Ikaria in their natural environment.

The varieties used are two local Phocian and Begleri. The grape gives bunches sparsely, with medium-sized roes. The yield per acre is less than 500k / acre and is cultivated on terraces throughout the island.

Fokiano produces wine with a special aroma and long aftertaste.

Begleri is cultivated on terraces throughout the island and its yield reaches 500 k / acre. It is a variety with a strong aromatic and complex character.

Afianes Winery collaborates with the research team of oenology of the TEI of Athens and implements winemaking procedures aimed at transporting as much raw grape elements as possible to the wine.

The wines produced at the Afianes Estate are divided into three categories, the premium, the common and the wine cellar (old bottles).

In the Premium category, wines of high standards and quality are produced, in a limited number of bottles, from 600 - 1.500 bottles per crop. The Begleri Litani is an excellent dry white wine, with an intense and exotic character, lively aftertaste and the possibility of aging for at least five years.

The Icarus Black is a special red dry wine with a complex character and rich from the Fokiano variety. Initially and for one year it ages in French-made oak barrels and continues in the bottle for another year.

The Tama is a sweet wine from overripe grapes, with a strong aromatic character, high acidity and high alcohol.

Mr. Afianes estimates that the vinification version of Fokianos, which he uses for the production of this wine - half of the grapes are gently dehydrated on the plants, while the rest are dehydrated spread in frames, outdoors and in the shade and in the first ten days of November are driven for crushing - is the closest to the famous Pramneio Wine.

Afianes Winery has participated in international competitions and its wines have won many awards.
