Tavern - Cafe in Paschalia

The tavern - cafe in Paschalias by Zacharias Pedos was suggested to us by most wanted friends. It has been operating since 1910 and is located in the village Plain, a rare village in Ikaria which has a plain!

The shop - nestled in the thick shade of an arbor with one amazing view in the orchards and in the mountains - it is separated by its balcony from the public one which fortunately is not crowded. Zacharias is in command, who, after missing a few years abroad, returned to his ancestors to calm down:

"I worked until I was 32, in all English-speaking countries, as a waiter, lance, etc. A few years ago I returned to the island and took the cafe. There were two friends, one tall Lent (height of forty days) and a short o Lilac (height of one week). My father took it from him and I take my turn a while ago. The kitchen is supervised by my mother Rica - from Irene - and is homely on all levels. Few things are bought. The products we use are vegetables from our farm, but also rabbits, ducks, chickens, pork, goats that give us milk to make our cheese.

Great festivities take place at the time when the mushrooms are harvested, in fact we do the relevant festivities, the "amanita aman" with music and songs.

We are not interested in development and advertising, we can not cook more than we can produce. Nor do we want to cook with foreign products.

Our dishes are goat and vegetables. Our specialty is Ikarian SufiThe maergy, if we find fish, but also stuffed with our vegetables ”.

The conversation with Zacharias, but also with Mrs. Rika (who is in a hurry of four hundred) is fascinating, because it is formulated effortlessly and without many cuts. the philosophy of everyday life of Ikaria.

The tavern-cafe also performs grocery duties, when one can leave with the sweets in the mouth and the heart, to buy homemade spoon sweets, handmade liqueurs and various vinegar, to get a souvenir of another perception of life.
