Drakos Fish Tavern

Drakos Fish Tavern

At VirusThe Drakos fish tavern is located on the east coast of the legendary Mylopotas at the end of Psili Ammos. Built in the early 60's, by George Drakos has closed over half a century of life.

It was then that beach of Mylopota was discovered by hippies, and it took an hour to get there on foot. Fires on the beach, nudism - despite all the signs about its prohibition - guitars, senses and hallucinations, tents and sleeping bags, vacationing in the surrounding caves! And the farmer with a donkey on the shore who sold watermelons, melons, grapes and figs.

Since then When this restaurant started operating, many things changed here in Mylopota. The materials for the kitchen no longer come with a donkey from Chora. Even the customers do not take the path to reach the shop, and the caves, and the metaphysical rock shapes of Ios, no one is left. Ios became a modern tourist destination.

But some things have not changed. Someone goes every morning to his small garden to pick zucchini tops that will be stuffed with rice (tsimetia) or fried with batter. Another cheeses and coagulates the sour, a soft white cheese, "endemic" of the island, which they spread over the dako or tomato salad. The blue table with the two tin buckets of sea water at the edge of the pier, where the fresh fish are cleaned, in front of the eyes of the customers, has not changed its position either. Especially the big red scorpions that will be grilled, a habit that traveled from Crete, while next to the table the furs are drying, another habit that traveled from Paros.

For the history we mention the genealogy of the tavern: The tavern in its first stage was built in 1963 by George Drakos and his wife Irene. At that time there were no buildings in Mylopota. The supply was made by donkey and the fishing boat and there was no electricity or road…

The baton and the reins of the store were taken by their children in the 70's  Costas and Lela (Cinnamon).

From the year 2001 the store was taken over by the third generation, George Drakos (grandson) and Chryssa -the beautiful little girl, the farmer's daughter with the donkey - and since they took over the store in 2000, they have renovated it and now it has become sought after hangout of Ios.

In the rich list of delicacies stand out the fresh fish that are supplied daily by the people of Niot and Kalymnos fishermen which are grilled, the lobster spaghetti, the juvette with shrimp and mussels, cuttlefish with fennel (top dish), the marinara, the octopus with the four , the fried rice with seafood, the fish soup and the island cod meatballs.

And they are happily circulating a booklet that arrived from abroad for their tavern with photos from the time when "nudism is a crime and violators are punished"!
