Farm I. Nomikos

Farm I. Nomikos

On a country road to Kamari in a traditional vaulted building complex is the "Farm I. Nomikos“, The most integrated agricultural-processing unit of Santorini processing and standardization of products of Theraic land, that is, her fava beans, sun-dried tomatoes, peanuts and desserts.

"If you want to grow fava beans and be successful, you have to become a fava beans yourself!"

This was the advice of John's father, George, who wanted to pass on the message to his young son that he must know all the secrets of fava beans in order to succeed. What are the best favo fields, where does the early one come from and where does the late one come from? split peas, what time should the harvest be done so that the bag with the fruits does not break (the sunrises to have moisture), how is the natural drying done. Many years have passed since then and Giannis has every reason to claim that "I have contact with every grain of fava".

Of course, many years have passed since then and the course of Giannis was not linear. Growing up in Outside Corner, one of its most beautiful villages Santorini, from a poor rural family, participated from an early age in the field work, sowing, cultivation, harvesting. Following the path of the children of the province, to escape from the poverty of the countryside, the mother of Artemia Nomikos, with her backwardness, encouraged him to study. Giannis succeeded in Industrial Piraeus, fulfilling his mother's dream but during his studies his mind was on his island and how to manage things in a new way. He returns to Santorini in 2000, starts dealing with fava beans and 2006 completes the craft, a small, exemplary organized vertical unit. Today it cultivates about 70 acres and its production depending on the crop ranges from 10 to 15 tons.

Today, only two standard beans produced on the island, that of Giannis and the local cooperative (Saint Wines). His craft also packs peanuts from Aegina of its own production, sun-dried tomatoes and pastries.

The unit "Farm I. Nomikos" is visitable and it is worth visiting, not only to shop for her goodies, but also to meet him and get something from his love for Santorini land.
