Nautical Museum of Oia

One of the most beautiful Nautical Museums in Greece is Nautical Museum of Oia at Santorini.

Its creator is Captain Antonis Dakoronias which since 1951 traces the traces of the naval history of the island, founding the Naval Museum of Oia. In 1990 the Museum is housed in a beautiful 19th century captain's house, donated by Oiatissa Dina Manolesou-Birbili and includes exhibits on the island's shipping history, especially during the 19th century when Santorini sailboats crossed the entire eastern Mediterranean from the Black Sea to Egypt, transporting either Thera land for the Suez Canal or the Suez Canal. Visanto, the famous Santorini wine which for many years were used by the orthodox churches of the Russian Empire for the Holy Communion.

The sailboats, captains and crews of Santorini, delivered their cargo and returned bringing all kinds of valuable goods, but also knowledge, experience and wealth to the island. At one point they brought it from Egypt anhydrous tomato which found in the microclimate of Santorini the ideal conditions to develop creating for many decades a new cycle of growth and prosperity, with the dozens of factories that made the tomato paste of the Santorini type, which in turn supplied the inhabitants of the island and all of Greece.

They are exhibited in the Museum rare rafters, anchors, old cannons, naval hulls, sailboats, marine equipment accessories, craft tools, boat molds and molds, models of old and newer ships shipowners, watercolors of beautiful sailboats, rare documents and books, charter and dowry agreements, wills and a rich photographic material.

The Nautical Museum of Oia captures the history of Santorini Shipping and caused the extroverted character of the island.
