Herronisos in Herronisos

At Herronisos of Sifnos I arrived 25 years ago by sea. There was no passable road, one could say a dirt road of disaster, Herronisos - Artemonas, and the transport was done by boats. I remember my feelings well!

I felt like I was entering paradise!

Although the place around the narrow strip of the sea - which looked like a long fjord - was wild and rocky, it exuded a calm and serenity and the only sounds heard were the seagulls and the laughter of children swimming on the shore. With the help of three huge tubs - probably from a truck, to remind you that in the old days, after the bottles we used to swim in, we discovered the tubes of cars - they were fighting, while near the shore they were throwing nets for foam fish!

I was enchanted from this fishing village that was located at the northern end of Sifnos, at a distance of 14 km from Apollonia and 4 hours on foot. Herronisos, according to the stories, at the beginning of the 20th century was a place full of kilns (25 in number reduced to 7 in 1970 and only one nowadays) and potters who made mainly pitchers and pots. In this picturesque harbor - now connected by a motorway - Nothing has changed. The kilns were extinguished and now they are inhabited only in the summer for the summer holidays by the locals while the two taverns from 1970 are holding well.

With tables on the concrete dock that leaves a narrow corridor for passers-by I sat down again in Herronisos tavern, with the name. Networks of origin with the crunches around them, their two boats Moschoula and Fyssaki, the same and unchanged. Only then it was Konstantinos and Margarita Fyssa who had set up the tavern from 1973, while now the son has taken over Antonis Fyssas with his beautiful and kind wife Stella.

From appetizers as if not a day had passed. Tsiros made by their own hands, juicy-juicy to start with ouzo, maridoula, potato and string beans local dry. Chickpea meatballs, spinach pie with homemade leaf, octopus and grilled shrimp and beyond that every day catches fish!
