Aggitis Cave

One of the most important tourist attractions of Eastern Macedonia is the Cave of the river Aggitis, which has the uniqueness of being the largest river cave in the world. Aggiti Cave is located about 25 km northwest of it Drama, in the municipality Prosotsanis, next to the village Πηγές, can be visited in a length of 500 meters, while in total it extends in a length of more than 21 kilometers.

It was discovered in 1978 by a team of French speleologists, in collaboration with the Hellenic Speleological Society.

The course inside the cave is impressive, as it takes place on a small technical "pedestrian" bridge that crosses along the length of the cave with the beautiful stalactites, sometimes above the calm waters of the river and sometimes above the noisy ones when they follow a course on a sloping bed. The exit of the river through the mountain, through a small arched opening at the base of a small vaulted cave (room of the wheel), is also impressive. This room has a diameter of 40 meters and a maximum height of 15 meters, while it was known because of the natural opening and was the starting point for speleologists.

The other name of the cave is "Maara", a name probably etymologically in Arabic as "small cave", or in Hebrew meaning "water from the mountain". Many archeological finds have been found in the area, which are kept in Archaeological Museum of Drama.

The river, rushing out of the cave, follows a path between a dense vegetation of plane trees and creates a very beautiful atmosphere for rehab, for a picnic, but also for a relaxed and more relaxing rest in the adjacent taverns and cafes.

Aggitis - the largest of the tributaries of the river Strymon, with a length of about 50 km - continues its journey and at the height of the village of Symvoli, receives water from the springs of Drama, from where begins a labyrinthine route between vertical rocks, forming the homonymous gorge of Aggitis, in Alistrati, Serres.
