Papaioannou Estate

A. & G. PAPAIOANNOU

90time Thanasis Papaioannou the "guru" and the pioneer of Nemea are justifiably considered. The 80's - when the Agiorgitiko went anonymously to the big wineries or arrived in bulk of unknown quality in our glasses - Thanasis Papaionnou made the big upset. With vineyards of 570 acres, following organic farming with deep knowledge, with vinification of specifications, is one of the first producers, who conceived and promoted the idea that wine must retain its special characteristics, coming from the variety, the position of the vineyard , thus imposing on its region the type of wine quality classic Nemea.

Today the son, George Papaioannou, always together with the experienced father, continues the tradition and contributes to the development of the estate. The wines they offer, in addition to the excellent quality, have another additional feature, which you do not easily find in other wineries, the ideal value for money.

By "Nestora" of Nemea when you start the conversation you can not come off. He talks about the vineyard in antiquity, about Theophrastus, about the natural treatment of cultivation and organic farming. With the enthusiasm of a teenager and the wisdom of a thymosophist, he fixes you and you hang from his lips:

"Although my goal was Agiorgitiko, I also cultivated foreign varieties and made wines that won awards at international exhibitions. "Foreigners had to understand that you are a good winemaker, and when they did not know our varieties well, they will judge by your ability to create good wines with their varieties".

Mr. Thanasis is proud of them awards of: Award for the best Greek Organic Producer - Berlin 2013, the gold of Petit Verdot in Vienna in 2011, the gold for Cava Papaioannou in Berlin in 2013 and dozens of others that adorn an entire wall of his winery.

The vineyards of the estate are scattered in the following areas of Nemea, Xirokampos (400m.) - Ai Lia Dosara - Columns of Ancient Nemea - Poria - Gefyraki - Provesta - Valtetsi and the varieties cultivated are Agiorgitiko, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot, Chardiron, Noiriko Syrah, Merlot, Touriga, Roussanne, Sauvignon Blanc and Petit Verdot.

Faithfully applying the doctrine that the philosophy of Greek wine should not be maximization but quality, the Estate produces 350.000 bottles, starring the homonymous with 100.000 bottles and "Agiorgitiko" with another 100.000.
