Place - History of Nemea

The first evidence for a settlement in the area exist in 1500 BC. on the Tsougiza hill, but there are no written texts. In the 10th century BC. 3 km from Nemea is built the city of Flounda which is considered the city of ancient Nemea and which flourished in the 6th century BC In 576 BC. next to today's Ancient Nemea (Heraklion) there was a famous sanctuary of Zeus. The temple of Zeus was a Doric style pavilion with 6 columns on the narrow sides and 12 on the long ones. In the surrounding area of ​​the temple there was a guest house, bath, stadium and there it was held from 573 BC. regularly every 2 years Nemea.

During the Byzantine years, Nemea was attacked many times by Slavs and Bulgarians, but prevented them from advancing further. It was conquered first by the Latins and then by the Turks. In the revolution of 1821, many residents took part in the struggle, led by Daniel Pampoukis. It was liberated in 1822, when the last Turkish army left Nemea.

The area was conquered by the Italians on April 26, 1941, while many guerrilla troops were created here during the occupation.
