Agora (Geladakis)

Psarotaverna i Agora (Geladakis)

Her most beloved culinary haunt Aegina is, simply, the fish tavern "i Agora" of the Geladaki family, located at its Eastern entrance Fish market of Aegina.

There are many reasons, and the most important one is because it gives a customer the rare joy of choosing with his own hands, the fish he wants to eat. And the variety of fish is the largest on the island. How can this be done from a small tavern, with 5-6 tables on the street and as many inside?

But for the simple reason why the shop is the Agora fish tavern. And anyone can turn to the fishmongers and from their stall, choose the fish they are hungry for, mullets, squid, the local kachoulas, tuna slices, swordfish, sardines and whatever else the Agora has available since dawn and give it to be grilled to the Mr. Stelios.

And the Geladaki family has an old tradition, which has now disappeared, in the fish markets there are some taverns that bake or fry (the teganitzidika) the small fish of the market.

Mr. Stelios Geladakis took over the shop in 1977 and since then for nearly half a century he has maintained the ultimate gastronomic haunt of Aegina.

"My father Christos and my mother Antippi, took over an old coffee shop in 1962, and they maintained it with coffees and ouzos with a few snacks. In 1977 I also started work, I set up a small fufu, I cooked octopuses, squids and little by little the number of appetizers grew, the fufu became grill that has never been turned off since. In 2000 we bought the shop and renovated it, adding a winter room with 30 seats upstairs.

Here you will see all kinds of people, the professionals of the market, the artists who live in Aegina, the politicians from all factions, visitors to the island who explore it, but also many regular patrons. They come for the snacks, the company, the feel of the market, and for a song. One of my regular customers was also Captain Vassilis Konstantakopoulos with his wife Mrs. Carmen. Most people make do with mine, fried and grilled fish, but others bring their own and I grill it for them, and they just pay for the grills.

My son and daughter also help me a lot, but I am more nourished by the love of the world."

Agora, the fish tavern of the Geladaki family, is without a doubt the navel of the fish market of Aegina, the center of the authentic life of the island.
