Crab stone

On the coastal road between Aegina and Souvala, at the height of the shipyard and right in front of a small fishing shelter with a few fishing boats, is the Kavouropetra tavern.

It is the place where for a few years now a young chef from school, the Panagiotis Besis continues a long-standing family tradition, putting its own stamp.

The tavern was first opened by Panagiotis' father, Basil, with his mother Helen, 30 years have passed now and Mr. Vassilis tells us how:

"In the 60's when we were little kids, there was nothing here. A little further on there was a shack something like a sailor cafe, where our mothers sat and drank their coffee and we played all day at sea. On the weekends there were family parties with guitars, songs and dances and the children fooled around or participated many times. Unique unforgettable memories. The years passed, I barged in, I traveled all over the world but my mind was on the island and especially in my favorite place of my childhood gatherings. At some point I could not stand it anymore and I make the decision, I unload and rent a half-ruined building in front of Kavouropetra, a few meters from the old cafe that had meanwhile closed. It was called crab stone because when you threw any stone on the rocks that protected the port, then dozens of crabs would be thrown".

So, from 1982 The Besi family slowly built a hangout that the area loved with its preoccupation and its good pan. Later, a large closed room with a fireplace was built for the cold winter days.

Although the power of Kavouropetra is the pan and the unbeatable fried kettles (the flat reddish fish-pride of the island that looks like a tongue) but also the grilling of fish, squid and octopus on the grill, the presence of Panagiotis gave a renewed note to the menu, where one can distinguish very strong dishes such as couscous with crayfish, marinated salmon, marinated anchovies, highly stuffed sardines and other interesting suggestions.
