Sunset

If throughout Hydra history is present everywhere, there are parts of it whose history has been written in indelible writing. One such point is in Cannons, where is the Sunset restaurant, a few meters below the mansion of Pavlos Kountouriotis, which dominates the west of the port of Hydra.

Going up to Cave (the Cannons as the people of Hydra call it) and before he reaches the Sunset restaurant, he will see on the plateau a kiosk. It is where Admiral Koundouriotis drank his coffee, and together with the most important prime minister of Greece of the 20th century, Eleftherios Venizelos, they roamed the sea and dreamed of a Greater Greece…

A few meters further in front of the historic cannons and the wonderful view, especially the sunset when the sun literally dives into the sea, the Antonis Rambias receives the 1993 a refreshment bar and creates a restaurant with Greek cuisine. Several years later, after a small expansion and investing money and hard work, Antonis creates the Sunset restaurant, which is awarded every year as one of the best view restaurants in the world!

With sought-after recipes, fresh fish, impeccable service and excellent product quality, Sunset moves between Mediterranean and Greek cuisine with an emphasis on Greek. Ececutive chef has been for years Panagiotis Papanikolaou, originally from Kassos, and serving in New York restaurants.

The person in charge, o Lefteris Mavros, son-in-law of Antonis, who has served in many shops, welcomes us in an environment that has nothing to envy the best restaurants in Europe. The dishes are all one and the same, we mention indicatively:

Sauteed shrimp with garlic butter, anchovy Chian marinated oil homemade in bruschetta, sautéed shrimp with eggplant mousse and Santorini tomato, steamed mussels with Kozani yolk, grilled sea bream marinated in rosemary with steamed vegetables, steamed anglerfish fillet with fresh vegetables in lemon-lemon sauce, pork fillet stuffed with feta cheese, olives, tomato in mackerel sauce and green salad. From cheeses: Feta, Manouri, Cretan gruyere, Smoked Metsovone, Anthotyro, Kaseri.

The Sunset Restaurant is open all day, and has the infrastructure to serve with the same comfort from 2 to 400 people.

And a little history, since we are in historic Hydra, below the mansion of Koundouriotis:

Admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis (1855-1935), from an old naval family of Hydra, as Commander of the Fleet and commander of the battleship "Averoff" in 1912 becomes the winner of the Naval Struggle in the Aegean, protagonist of the historic naval battles of Elli and the main architect of the victory of the Balkan Wars 1912-1913.

His tomb is located on the slope of the hill between the mansion and the sea.

The listed historic building was purchased in 1991 by the Ministry of Culture and functions as a Museum.
