House of Panagiotis Tetsis

The painter, academic and teacher Panagiotis Tetsis (Hydra, 1925 - Athens, 2016) lived in Hydra his childhood, in his family home. During the last year of the Occupation he entered the School of Fine Arts from which he graduated in 1949 after having teachers Pavlos Mathiopoulos and Konstantinos Parthenis. With a scholarship he completed his studies at the Paris School of Fine Arts in the period 1953-1956. In 1976 he was elected professor at the Fine Arts where he remained until 1991 while in 1989 he was elected rector. In 1993 he became a member of the Academy of Athens. THE painting is characterized as an expression of expressionism and his works include scenes of everyday life, portraits, landscapes and still life always in a game of bright colors and light.

In 2007 the painter donated in the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece his mother's house in Hydra in order to create after his death a museum that will house his studio and works.

Tetsis lived on the island during his childhood and with this house are connected his first contacts with painting and the world of art. From the late 1980s until recently he worked in this old house having turned the upstairs hall into studio. The painter's relationship with his birthplace remained close and special until the end. He always conveyed his love for the island to his students from the School of Fine Arts, whom he brought every year to the School Branch in Hydra, often hosting them in this house.

This house It is a typical popular hydraulic house of the 19th century - beginning of the 20th, which was even used for the professional activities of the family, housing on the ground floor a candle factory and a grocery store - tavern. The will of the painter and donor was the maintenance and promotion of the house as a whole, both the family home, the grocery store on the ground floor and the wine cellar in the basement, which are preserved intact to this day, as well as the studio of the painter and his works in floor.

The Panagioti Tetsi House can be visited to anyone who requests it, in collaboration with the staff of the Historical House of Lazaros Koundouriotis, the branch of the National Historical Museum in Hydra, which has been operating as a museum since 2001. It is noted that works by the late Tetsis, all about Hydra, are presented on the floor Historic House of Lazaros Koundouriotis.
