Athinaikos (Metropolis)

Athinaikos (Metropolis)

The Athinaikon restaurant at 34 Mitropoleos Street, one hundred meters east of the Diocese, is the modern version of the good old Greek tavern. It opened its doors in 2009 and is the sister of the historian traditional tavern Athinaikon on the pedestrian street of Themistocleous 2.

Athinaikon was born on Santaroza Street 1932 by three famous Smyrna cooks, next to the old courts, and in 1981 it was taken over by Costas Papadopoulos and Argyris Porphyriou, two young lads, Economics students who worked there as waiters to survive. In the course, in 1987, they were transferred to Themistokleous where they wrote history with the well-known headquarters of the Lefterists (friends of L. Papadopoulos).

The Athenian of the Metropolis managed in a very short time to establish itself in the heart of tourism Of Athens not only to the visitors of the city but also to its inhabitants who move to the Center and want to enjoy Greek cuisine in a civilized environment.

Housed on the ground floor of the impressive neoclassical building with columns and ornate balconies on the marble facade, in architectural curation Elias Barbalia, Athenaikon restaurant is characterized by the discreet luxury of the materials used (glass, mirror, metal, plexiglass, leather, wood) and the inventive use of the impressive well with the ancient storage crater located in the bowels of the building. On the walls paintings by Apostolos Yagiannos, photographs and lyrics by well-known Greek poets, as well as a video projection of photographs of old Athens, the shop of Santaroza, Themistocleous as well as snapshots of the life of the Liberators, complete the atmosphere of the spacious hall.

The rich menu, where the appetizers that wrote history in The Athenian of Themistocles stand out - such as the lobster croquettes, the lacquer, the pastrumadopitakia, the meatballs fermented with sour trachana, the classic meatballs -, the freshly cut salads, the traditional crepes with seafood and fresh fish, are completed with the sweet suggestions of the chef, where the protagonist remains the unsurpassed baklava.

The description for the restaurant Athinaikon could not be completed except with the reference to excellent service from the team of experienced and noble waiters who under the watchful eye of the owners (the next generation entered the game) happily serve their customers.

One of the few bright, spacious, elegant spaces in the center of Athens, well-cooked Greek food, excellent service, price-quality ratio very good, familiar atmosphere but with the weight of historicity, what else would we like to claim that Athens has its own restaurant, to be worthily compared to the tradition of the legendary "Olympus -Naoussa ”of Thessaloniki.
