Brown Melina
In one of the most picturesque streets of Plaka in Athens, Greece, on Lysiou Street, is a cafe dedicated to the legendary woman, Melina Merkouri, the brown Melina.
The homonymous cafe is one of the most special shops in Athens, as it moves between a Greek cafe and a French bistro whose walls are full of photos of Melina. On the red walls, an old-fashioned nostalgic decoration and many more photos through the cinema, her personal life and souvenirs with faces-symbols of the universe. Photos with Ulf Palme, with Indira Gandhi, with Robert Kennedy, Salvatore Daly, Federico Fellini, Rudy's husband, Jules Dassen, but also our Onassis, Kazanakis, Hazotagis, Thezos.
The photos, as well as some personal items, were handed over from the Melina Mercouri Foundation to Andreas Martzaklis, the owner of the cafe, who with due respect but also with a lot of love and passion - knew Melina - built a hangout worthy of her name. a great diva, the worthy fighter of the Republic, but also a visionary of the return of the Elgin marbles and the creation of the Acropolis Museum.
The doors of Melina cafe open early for morning coffee and for tithing and remain open all day for coffee or food, while in the evening the tables are lit by candlelight in old candlesticks turning Melina Cafe into an atmospheric bar.
A big advantage is the outdoor area with tables on the steps below the Acropolis, ideal for sunny days. And of course, the other advantage of Melina coffee is its owner, the Andreas Martzaklis, who with his exuberant, unruly character and his genuine kindness, has managed to make his shop a point of reference. A haunt of the neighbors, of all classes and professions who will pass by the cafe to learn the news of their neighborhood, of the inhabitants of the capital who especially on the weekends pour in Plaka, but also of the foreign visitors of the historical center who will pass from here to sunbathe , to drink their coffee, to have a snack but also to eat lightly and of course to remember the great Melina again.
Melina Cafe, in the shadow of one of the most beautiful and most photographed bougainvilleas in Athens, has successfully completed 20 years of operation and is one of the emblematic shops of the center of Athens.
