The Cod of Damigos

I. Damigos

The underground tavern of Damigos, also known as “The cod", Is located at 41 Kydathinaion Street and is its oldest living tavern Of Athens.

The year of its foundation is 1864 and as Marie (Lettuce) Damigou tells us, the tavern has passed into the hands of the fourth generation:

"My grandfather George Damigos (1902-1987) came to Athens from Santorini and in 1925 he married my grandmother Maroulia Karamalegou who also came from Santorini. Her family were the first owners of the tavern but my grandfather was the one who made her famous. Ministers, deputies, artists, people and dunias have passed through here! "

Really in the church of the Greek tavern - Manos Katrakis had said: "We do not come here to eat cod, we come here to worship" - in the basement of Damigos, as soon as you go down the steep stone steps you are in an environment that takes you to other times. The space is three small rooms, connected by two narrow corridors. The wooden barrels, the crystal clear grill where the famous codfish are fried in front of you, the photos on the walls depicting Giorgos Damigos being awarded for his retsina - it was the time when retsina was glorified -, the "golden diploma awards" for the "excellent quality of wine "or for the" brilliant decoration ", the sketches of foreign journalists, the photo with the haughty look of grandmother Maroulia and of course the old marble column that supports the ceiling of the main hall create an impressive setting.

"My sister Vasiliki and I spent our childhood at the feet of our grandparents - we went to the 1st Girls' High School in Plaka - and wherever you lost us, we came here to see them movie stars that they used to frequent in our tavern.

One of them was Orestis Makris, the second cousin of the grandfather and in fact some scenes of "Methystakas" have been shot in Bakaliarakia. Other actors loved Damigo's tavern, including Manos Katrakis, Nikos Koundouros, Despo Diamantidou, Alekos Alexandrakis, Dimitris Papamichael, Jenny Roussea, Alekos Tzannetakos, Zozo Sapoundzaki and others. I remember my grandfather together with his cousin Orestis Makris and their friends not missing an opportunity, with guitar and mandolin accompanied to sing and party. The idea for the title of the tavern but also for the food of the tavern came from the grandfather who wanted to be different from the other classic taverns in the area and so he thought of serving it as specialty the cod. "

Here in Cod, in the basement of Damigos, in the noisy Plaka, one will be able to enjoy in peace, the most delicious cod in Athens, crispy on the outside and very tender on the inside - the grandfather's recipe, from the hands of a young cook from the school of chefs of LE MONDE, Alexandros Gousios and of course other lentils.

But the main thing is that he will be able to travel for a while in the world of old Athens, away from the running of our current life. And this is very good for digestion!
