Euripides

Η Evripidou Street is without a doubt its most fragrant road Of Athens. The daily image of the crowded Euripides is nothing but the proof that people love good food and come from the most remote neighborhoods to choose the spice that will taste good in their cooking. And this regardless of times and financial difficulties.

From 1886, when the Varvakeios Municipal Market of Athens and all the surrounding streets were connected with the food trade, Euripides was identified with the smells of "edible and colonial", a fact that has remained to this day.

Η Evripidou Street, depending on the geography of its trade, is divided into four zones.

The part of Euripides above Aeolus is similar to all the streets of the shopping center of Athens, with the small shops of various goods complemented by some modern cafes and youth hangouts.

Between Aeolus and Athena, at her height Varvakeio market, are dominated by grocery stores, such as feta and its other dairy products Laskaris Brothers, its cheese products Strougas of Moria, the brothers' grocery Iakovaki, the shop North along with other stores of nuts (peanuts, almonds, walnuts) and dried fruits (dates, plums, raisins, figs, blueberries, blueberries). They are not missing either groceries those specializing in pasta starring Icelandic cod, herring and lacquer, but also others representing areas of the country such as Zouridaki from Crete. On the corner with Athena on the Agora side is an open-air shop Balm, developed at the height of a wall where in transparent plastic bags are displayed as many herbs and spices as the mind can fit. From the Greek herbs, chamomile, mint, tilia, sage, dittany, marjoram, thyme, from the simplest to the rarest with origin from Olympus or Taygetos and many more, while from exotic there are spices, paprika, spices, and all kinds of peppers.

Between Athena and Menandros is the most impressive and most fragrant part of Euripides. Small shops like small gardens with herbs and plants in seeds and pots for the kitchen and the terrace, with the most impressive the tiny Plow which usually extends the showcase with its flowers on its permanently parked van.

Next to them are the hardware items with items for the household kitchen, but also for the professional equipment of mass catering areas, from kettles, pots, cutlery, various items for the home, to porcelain and multi-machines, such as Kiourtzoglou (47 Evripidou) and o Kato (38 Evripidou), which are also the best known.

Shops with spices that surpass even the most vivid imagination, such as Spice (Evripidou 31-33) with its customers forming a queue along the road to get the 2.500 herbs and spices it brings from all over the world, the Elixir (41 Evripidou) with the tasteful organization of its products in a wooden showroom with beautiful transparent drawers and where information is given about the healing properties of each spice (sage for memory, clove for indigestion, thyme as an antiseptic) and a few dozen still. At the height of Socrates, are the Miran (45 Evripidou) and o Arabian (41 Evripidou) which from beef makers to pastourmatzides evolved into networks for the promotion of cold cuts and small cheese producers from all over Greece.

Below Socrates, the well-known companies are limited, but always with related products, while Chinese shops that have escaped from their main square, the Chinatown of Metaxourgeio, are also mushrooming.

Crucial for its future Euripides was the designation by the competent ministry during the term of office of Nikos Sifounakis as a "traditional trade area", a fact that will help it maintain its existing form.
