Patmos Mansions

There are some sights, which unfortunately are invisible to most mortals. A typical example is mansions of Patmos in Chora, which at one time was inhabited by lords and around the end of the 20th century most were bought by tycoons of the modern era.

Nevertheless, they are worth mentioning in order to visit them with our thoughts and to go even deeper into the atmosphere of this castle.

The country is one medieval settlement with sidewalks about a meter wide, developed around the imposing Monastery of Agios Ioannis the Theologian. From the Monastery began the need for defensive spatial planning, with the spiral cobblestones, the cuts and the stone vaulted passages that embrace the monastery castle and confuse passers-by and formerly aspiring conquerors.

The settlement of the country began to develop mainly after its fall Istanbul, and later after fall of Chandakas (1669) when important families come to settle. From the middle of the 18th century, the construction around the Monastery is completed, where on the North side of the perimeter, on the brow of the cliff, the young shipowners who wanted to see their boats from above, as they were stranded in Skala, settled.

The homes and mansions They are made of local stone and are whitewashed in their entirety except for the gonias of the walks, the cornerstones, the pillars and the lintels that are processed stones and are preserved in their color. Due to the composition of the rock, there are two types: the limestone of the Great Stone Beige ocher and the limestone of Manolakas of gray color and high strength. The floors on the ground floors and on the verandas were made of tiles, the so-called tiles, squares or rectangles.

The floors for the floors and ceilings used wood from other places.

The furniture of the mansions confirms the social prestige of the lords and the shipowners. Furniture from Venice and from England, porcelain and crystals, chandeliers and gilded impressive mirrors, paintings, family portraits and photographs create a unique atmosphere. It is no coincidence that in 2009 in the list of the magazine Forbes with the ten most idyllic places in Europe to liveThe Patmos owned the first class!
