Citrus - Aroma of Memory

At Plain at Chios - the only example of harmonious coexistence of housing, agriculture and complementary functions that has rightly been described as a "historic site" and "traditional settlement" by the Ministry of Culture - in this place full of smells and history, the idea of ​​creating a space for promotion and development was born of the history of the citrus of the Plain. THE Vangelis Xydas and George Plakotaris, both raised in Kampos, went ahead in 2008, utilizing a European Union subsidy to set up the company Citrus - Aroma of Memory.

Vangelis Xydas previously had an experience in the processing of the valuable raw material of the citrus fruits of Kampos, when with the handicrafts of Perleas -covered in a mansion of Kampos- had been engaged in the preparation of sweets of Chios. In 2010, Stamos Fafalios, also from Chios, took active action at CITRUS, and has now taken over the management of the company.

The project succeeded in both its activities.

The Museum - the Citrus Memories -, housed in a family specially designed unique mansion of 1742, was created to highlight and promote the history, cultivation, collection and distribution of citrus Chios. Taking a tour of the site and studying the items (maps, photographs, tools, farming practices, packaging materials, stories of citrus trade streets) the visitor realizes that the cultivation of oranges and unique mandarins of the Plain is the one that has given the region its unique economic and cultural value.

The project of the Museum was a huge success, in fact it was done the third in a row visitable area of ​​Chios. And not unjustly, because the Citrus estate apart from showing the documents of the history of the citrus of Kampos, it is essentially the only estate in Kampos that can be visited. Here the visitor is transported to another era, lost in the well-preserved orchards, the beautiful buildings, and it is as if he lives in a fairy tale.

The productive activity was also a great success. Citrus utilizes two estates in the Plain of Chios with a total area of ​​more than 40 acres, which mainly produce organic products and are cultivated with traditional techniques. The products produced are pastries, jams, underwater, with flavors of citrus and other fresh fruits, but also fresh Turkish delights and macaroons.

The disposal takes place either at the estate in Kampos, or in Athens where they maintain a store, or in partner stores. Citrus presence at trade shows is always impressive because wherever it goes it leaves it behind Aroma of Memory...
