Caterpillar Gorge

The gorge of the Caterpillars, is one of its most beautiful walking routes Chios. And it is very comforting that in Chios, with the co-financing of the European Union, they were financed through the region North Aegean about ten paths ( St. Giannis- Ag. Galas, Volissos- Malagioti Valley, Olympi-Mesta etc.) to be restored, signaled and rendered to walkers.

Our guide is George Misetzis, who led us to Caterpillar, where from the village parking lot we caught her beginning of the path and we saw the verdant gorge that we had to cross.

Following it path we took the downhill, accompanied only by the sounds of the waters, which while we did not see, we heard very loudly. The dense vegetation not only prevented the visual contact with the torrents, but also many times hindered the walking as the foliage had drowned the path. Good luck to our guide George, the atheist who had three different types of lawn mowers with him and used them properly. After about 25 minutes the downhill - and slightly tedious - route ends and the path reaches the creek, when we started walking parallel to the riverbed.

The route parallel to the river lasts long enough, among dense vegetation of plane trees and wild roses. The trail often crosses from one bank to the other over the river with newly built wooden bridges - as part of the restoration of the trail - and then goes uphill, away from the river and through the cultivated areas.

At the top of a large vertical rock we see the small church of Agia Paraskevi and beyond bird observatory.

At some point the path begins to descend again and soon meets the river again. For some years there was a small dam, from the rim of which began the stone irrigation ditch that led the water to the orchards (traces of which still exist) that remain overloaded with citrus fruits, with first and best overgrown lemons of the place. In a few meters we reach the mouth of the river and the beach, tired but happy. The walk in the gorge of Kambia is complete.
