Korakis - Marinos

Homemade Sweets of Chios

The history of the company Korakis begins around 1935, when Panagiotis Korakis, a Chian importer and sugar trader decides to become active in the field of sweets.

The first workshop was set up near Vounaki Square, where baklava, kadaifi and the famous quince paste Koraki.

After the war the laboratory will be transferred to Venizelou Street and then the systematic production of spoon sweets, which will become one of the most recognizable, not only in the local market, but also throughout Greece.

Success will be based on the production of sweets, juices and mastic-submarine from homemade recipes. The sweets were initially sold in bulk, while the first packaging was done in tin cans, to later reach the elegant glass packaging.

The big changes will take place after 1985, when the company is taken over by Panagiotis' daughter, Irini Koraki, together with her husband Dimitris Marino. A laboratory will be set up in the Kontari area, while in 1989 the new, modern, privately owned factory in Chalkios of the Municipality of Kampochora. The factory has the advantage of being close to the production site of many of the delicious fruits that are used as raw material, while it has the latest technology mechanical equipment, as well as specially trained scientific and technical staff. A special program is implemented at the factory on the production line to ensure hygiene and quality.

The factory processes 120-150 tons of fruit per year and the production of mastic-submarine reaches 150 tons per year. The company's products are available through representatives throughout Greece, as well as in foreign markets such as Cyprus and Turkey.

I visited the company's facilities and was impressed by the technological equipment, the flavors, the new innovative aesthetic packaging, as well as the will of the younger generation to further develop the company with new ideas. Regarding the flavors of the spoon sweets, I tried and enjoyed quince, sour cherry, pistachio, fig, orange, bergamot, grape, walnut, eggplant!
