Cafe-Ouzo of Maria Georgiou in Fourni

The village Ovens is located 8 km north of Kranidi, on the road to Epidavros. His houses have a traditional island color like the folk houses of the Saronic Gulf and Ermionida, with narrow cobbled streets, gardens full of flowers. Its beauty is not visible from the public road, because it passes by the settlement and does not cross it, and so hurried travelers often do not notice it.

The village today has only 300 inhabitants who deal with olives, citrus fruits, the younger ones with the tourist professions in the wider Ermionida, while in the past many of its inhabitants were sailors. At that time it had 3-4 cafes while today the only thing left is that of the Georgiou family. In the center of the village, the cafe-ouzo of Maria Georgiou is beautiful, a stone-built two-storey mansion with a tidy garden with orange groves. Maria received it from her parents 1995, operates until today and gives life to the village as it is its only shop.

«The building is from the beginning of the 20th century, and my grandparents operated it as a cafe, and later it was taken over by my parents Kosmas and Dimitra. In 1995 I stopped working as a hotel manager, renovated it and operated it as a café and grocery store for basic necessities and a tavern.

In the morning it opens as cafe, at noon as tavern, close at 2.30 and open again at 6.30 until midnight, from Easter to October. In winter I only work as a coffee shop and grocery store, or tavern on request. My dishes are meatballs, soutzoukaki, fried aubergines with red tomato sauce with basil and feta crumbs -my mother's favorite- chicken with noodles, and whatever else inspires me. Well, let's just say I made a cauliflower tart today.

In the summer we are visited by many visitors from the surrounding areas and others who go to the gorge Katafiki which has been characterized as of special natural beauty. The gorge crossed by a torrent, with vertical walls 200 m high, is overgrown with pines, plane trees, laurels and is ideal for hiking».
