Il Borgo Restaurant

The Il Borgo restaurant is located in the homonymous settlement outside the fortress of Agios Georgios or otherwise Kastro, at a distance of 7 km from Argostoli, which is one of the most important monuments of Of Kefalonia.

The fortress has an area of about 16.000 sq.m. and perimeter 600 meters. It has a polygonal shape. It consists of the outer wall, the inner courtyard, which is shaped like a horseshoe, and a rocky peak that rises in the center of the precinct where the ruins of the so-called Old Fortress are located.

The Κάστρο, as it is called today, was the only populous city of Kefalonia from the Middle Ages and at the same time its capital until 1757 when it became Argostoli. In the official Venetian archives it is referred to as City of Cefalonia, ie City of Kefalonia. Churches and buildings are preserved inside, as well as in the suburb (borgo) east of the entrance. Right at the entrance of the suburb where the few inhabitants live for emotional reasons in a more closed society, and 200 meters from the metropolitan church of Evangelistria -typical example of Ionian Baroque-, you will meet in your left hand the Il Borgo restaurant.

First image is a large courtyard covered by an arbor with a very rich foliage, and in the background an amazing view of the villages around the airport, the Ionian Sea and in the background Zakynthos. This store for a long time was with another address, without any special identity and character, until in 2014 it was taken over by Angeliki Spyratou with her family and turned it into a landmark of Kefalonian gastronomy.

Il Borgo offers unique flavors from a mix of traditional Kefalonian cuisine, national dishes and versions of Mediterranean cuisine, with gourmet notes of concern. I singled out the braised meatballs, the Kefalonian meat pie, the pastitsio and the moussaka in individual portions in a clay bag, lamb with barley, zucchini meatballs, cigarettes, rabbit rabbit in ro who just finished the school Le Monde of Athens came to the island to help her.

A special feature of Il Borgo is the very interesting wine list that includes by category - white, rosé and red wine - important labels of both Kefalonian and Greek vineyards.

We spoke with Mrs. Angela, a happy and optimistic Kefalonian woman:

«Little do I remember the big tables we made at home. My father was a sailor in the winter but he lived on the island and hunted and we cooked the hunts in different ways. But also at the festivals I remember that we made the goat soup, and we made its legs into meat pie. For twenty years I had a canteen at school. In 2014 I made the big decision with my husband and my 2 children, him Vangelis and Nikos. We worked hard to change the identity of the old store and I am glad that in recent years our work at Il Borgo has been recognized».
