Fish Farms of Kefalonia

The Fish Farms of Kefalonia was the first fish farm in Europe to produce Mediterranean sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and Mediterranean sea bream (Sparus auratus) and is considered a world leader in the production of these species.

The Fish Farms of Kefalonia were founded in 1981 by Marino Geroulano, Fourth generation Kefalonian, father of Pavlos Geroulanos of the former Minister of Culture of the government of George Papandreou.

Marinos Geroulanos started as a hobby in fish farming, but developed into a hoe in the industry in Greece, since in Kefalonia, in the early 80's, the first Greek offspring was produced. The company was also a kind of school since several managers who today move the threads of the industry had worked in the Fish Farms of Kefalonia.

In 1994 Pavlos takes over the financial management of the company and in 1998, Lara's wife takes over the helm. Born in London, studying economics and specializing in business restructuring, she made a personal bet on the company's recovery.

There were three moves for the company to move to profitability today and return to the glory of the past: First, it produced more fish by weight than the competition, second, it traded it directly to restaurants or in gourmet groceries, while only a percentage of 10% in the wholesale (eg fish ladders) and, thirdly, was the first Greek unit to produce organic fish, which pushed its reputation abroad.

Nowadays the company employs about 100 employees and has a turnover of around 20 million euros.

Thanasis Frentzos, general manager of the unit, member of the team that first started the fish farm, and Evi Abatzidou, production manager of the fish breeding station that has been working here for over 30 years, informed us:

"Each of our fish has a unique identity, which connects it with complete reliability to the eggs and the offspring from which it came. We keep a complete record throughout the life of the fish, with data on all environmental parameters, food, water temperatures and physicochemical parameters. And all this because we believe that our consumer should know what he eats ".

The Fish Farms of Kefalonia have conquered the international markets with their products like fresh whole Mediterranean sea bass, the whole fresh Mediterranean sea bream, the whole fresh mill and fresh or frozen, organic, Mediterranean sea bass and sea bream, gutted and peeled, packaged in individual portions for the retail market.
