Kyr-Giannis Estate

The Kyr-Giannis Estate founded in 1997 by Giannis Boutari, one of the distinctive forms of Greek winemaking, when he left the family company Boutaris Winery created by his grandfather 1879. And while together with his brother Kostas (Kostas was involved in finance and administration and Giannis in viticulture and winemaking) they create the Boutari Winery, one of the most important wineries in Greece with wineries in places where PDO wines were produced (Naoussa, Goumenissa, Mantineia, Attica, Crete, Santorini) Giannis Boutaris decided to leave and create wines of his own philosophy.

Stations in its own course now is that in 1970 it planted 400 acres of Xinomavro at the eastern foot of Mount Vermio, in Giannakochori, close to city of Naoussa. This vineyard will then become the Kyr-Giannis Estate.

In 1985-1990 he planted 200 acres of white varieties in the highlands of the northern part of Mount Vermio, in the area of Amyntaio and in 1996 the old winery bought in the village of Agios Panteleimonas will become "Paraga" the winery of the Kyr-Giannis Estate in Amyntaio.

1997 is the year that the company Kyr-Giannis is created and the first crop that is completely vinified in the new winery.

2004 o Stellios Boutaris, the eldest son of Giannis, takes over the management of the company and bottles his first wine 2 Olives and until 2006 he plants two hundred and eighty acres of vineyards with Xinomavro, other Greek and international varieties, emphasizing the identification of the most ideal point in the vineyard and the most suitable Xinomavro clones.

In 2009, one hundred more acres are added, making the Kyr-Giannis Estate one from the largest vineyards in Greece.

Today, Stellios Boutaris, fourth generation winemaker, leads the team of Kyr-Giannis in the next phase of the evolutionary course of the Estate, making dynamic use of the main pillars of the Kyr-Giannis philosophy: innovation, respect for tradition and specialized knowledge about wine, from the vineyard to the final consumer.

And if Giannis Boutaris is considered the "patriarch of Greek wine" and a diverse personality, charismatic and stormy, the winemaker who through his searches in the Greek vineyard "made" people who led our wine to the new era like Angelos Iatridis in Amyntaio or Giannis Paraskevopoulos in Nemea and Santorini, or even, he was President of the CEO, moved earth and sky to implement Wine Tourism in Greece and was awarded by the International Wine Academy as the winemaker of the year (1996, 2003), his son Stellios is one of the youngest winemakers with a vision and a clear business outlook, which lead our wine to the new era, inside and outside the borders, and in fact in a difficult situation, leading the company of Kyr-Giannis to produce 1.000.000 bottles (the two wineries of Naoussa and Amyntaio) per year and export them to 35 Countries!

In addition to its institutional position as President of the Wines of Northern Greece with his attitude he strengthens the synergies and collaborations by strengthening the brand of his place.

«There is no way I can host a foreign journalist and not open bottles for him, apart from my own, from fellow producers in Naoussa, so that they can try them too.».

Today, the vineyard in Giannakochori in Naoussa with a total area of 580 acres and extends at an altitude between 280 and 330 meters - the highest point of the Naoussa PDO zone - is planted with Xinomavro (50%), Syrah (15%), Merlot (20%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%), while the rest of the area is covered by various experimental varieties.

With a variety of terroir with different soil types, from clayey to sandy-clayey, and sections with different slope and exposure to the sun, the Kyr-Giannis Estate has been divided into 40 different parts, each of which is cultivated separately. The coexistence of so many different elements in such a limited space is a constant challenge for the producer, but at the same time gives the opportunity to create very complex and different wines.

The wines at the Kyr-Giannis Estate produced in the winery of Naoussa are:

  • Blue tractor, PGI Macedonia, varieties Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot
