Monemvasia Winery - George Tsimpidis

Η Monemvasia Winery was established on 20 September 1997 in Monemvasia Laconia by George Tsimpidis. George's plans were ambitious as his goal was to revive him of wine Malvasia, a wine that was in the past, an exportable product and now continues to be produced in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Madeira, Croatia, California. Until recently only in the place where it was born and where it bore its name was not produced!

Tsimbidis's meeting with Mrs. played a crucial role in the revival developments of Malvasia. Stavroula Kourakou, the great lady of Greek wine and with the same inspirer and leader, they devised a comprehensive action plan for the revival of Malvasia that lasted 14 whole years. European programs were utilized and in collaboration with the Agricultural Universities of Athens and Thessaloniki, ETHIAGE, etc., they created experimental vineyards and proceeded with experimental vinifications.

On 23 July 2010 the wines Monemvasia - Malvasia as a Protected Designation of Origin for white sweet wine from sun-dried grapes and wine liqueur from sun-dried grapes of Monemvasia (50%), Kidonitsa and Asproudes varieties and participation of Assyrtikos. Malvasia of 2010 was bottled for the first time by Monemvasia Winery and was launched in 2013 after 2 years of aging.

«This is how the beautiful sleeping woman, Monemvasia-Malvasia, woke up after five centuries of sleepHe tells us with a smile George Tsimpidis which continues. «In all the competitions we have sent it, it is scanning the prizes and its exports to Europe, USA and China have already started.».

George Tsimpidis is a great fighter and after planting or reviving old vineyards, created a privately owned vineyard of 300 acres, from 2015 began a struggle to create a new winery. The 2021 Tsimpidis winery was installed in a state-of-the-art winery, with very beautifully designed wine tasting and aging areas, and started the new production. For 2021 the production exceeded 300.000 bottles. 45% of the production is Kidonitsa, another wine highlighted by Monemvasia Winery and the rest are Monemvasia, Asproudi, Assyrtiko, 300, Monemvasia-Malvazia and Laiko, a table wine that breaks in Laconia. George is an inspired visionary but also a broader philosophical personality.

«To get acquainted with winemaking, our company created the first privately owned vineyards of about 300 planted with indigenous varieties, in an area with interesting terrain, diversity of soil and subsoil, many winds and proximity to the sea. That is, factors that favor our grapes for the production of wines that, rightly, sweep international awards and distinctions. In 1999, exports accounted for 10% of our turnover. From 2004 until today the percentage has gone up a lot.

The relationship I have with every wine label is special, for example for Asproudi, I had realized that because it was an early variety, in the vintage of the other grapes it was extinct because it was eaten by birds. So the wine label had a bird on the vine».

George together with his wife Elli, a fighter and she, and their daughters, are preparing next year to present their winery in its final form to meet all his friends and fans.
