Koubourelia ouzo
The Koubourelia ouzo is an old and good tsipouro restaurant identified with Shadow, the old port, its patrons, its owners, and the history of the island.
Since then, the owners may have changed and it was renewed externally, but its appetizers and the good Thessalian tsipouras not only do not change but are also enriched. And it is one of the restaurants that operate on the island 10 months a year, and that is a big deal.
The history of the store begins in the 1960s when Ioannis Kampourelias, known to the locals as "Turkish" opened one ouzo-tsipouro restaurant in the old port of Skiathos. Tsipouro restaurants have a history dating back to the third decade of the 20th century when Greek refugees from Asia Minor brought with them to the places where they settled, their rich gastronomic tradition, and among them the tsipouro appetizers.
In the port of Skiathos in the period of '60 there were about 10 cafes-tsipouro restaurants that served mainly the fishermen of the island, as they were served the morning coffee, dawn before sunrise and leave to go to collect their nets or their longlines . On their return to noon, the fishermen again drank the ouzos with their appetizers.
The years passed, the boats and the wind turbines dwindled, as did the cafes-tsipouro restaurants that were turned due to tourism into shops for other uses. Kambourelias was left alone, he adapted, he combined the cafe with a restaurant. The 2005 they received the Kambourelias tavern two first cousins from Karditsa, Alkiviadis and George Koukoulis and gave her a new lease of life.
«We came young from our place to find work in Skiathos in 1985. We worked in many shops and learned the job. In 2005 the store was liberated and we had the opportunity to spread our wings. We wanted to hang it all atmosphere of the tsipouro restaurant, in fact we enriched the tsipouro appetizers, but we wanted to renew the kitchen of the store", Alkiviadis tells us.
And I think now, 15 years later, one can say that they did it. The Koubourelia ouzo - the historical name was based - it is a multipurpose and diverse store, and it does it with great success.
In the morning the few fishermen, but also many workers will drink their coffee, later you will try delicious delicacies, and during the meal you will find cooked foods such as beef stew, beef juvette (to remember the juvettes of Papadiamantis) soutzoukaki, moussakades and pastitsia, as seafood and fresh fish sold by the kilo. However, many dishes, such as its salads, fish stew, its pasta with Alonissos tuna or with shrimp, have nothing to envy from the most gourmet versions, in taste and beauty.
