Cafe of Kyra Sofia (Varza) in Sokraki
Going up to Sokraki, after Ano Korakiana, one follows a serpentine road to the top of Mount Koraki, in Corfu. The road is narrow, full of hairpins, it is not 2,5 meters wide, drowned in the tall olive trees, it is difficult to distinguish it from afar. Sample of the old but very dense road network, the dowry left by the British in Corfu. The road finally reaches the top and in a clearing it shows Sokraki. The spectacle from there is amazing. Corfu at your feet, with its vast olive groves and clusters of tall cypress trees stretching from north to south and from the Ionian to the Adriatic.
The village is deserted and the cafes are hermetically sealed. It is located the best cafe - according to my information - the cafe of Kyra Sofia in Sokraki, "Varzas" his name, with the keys on the door…
Relieved, I go in and see a furious woman in trousers getting ready to leave.
"Good morning, could I have a coffee?" I ask politely. "Mom, you idiot, is it time for coffee now? with such good weather, it has been raining for days now, let's go pick olives; come at night for a snack ".
My pleas - because at night I had to travel to Athens - took place. On the fly, Mrs. Sophia opened the door for me, to admire her paradise and take a couple of photos.
"The other cafes in the village were renovated. But I wear mine as before, so the guide who brings ten to ten tourists in the summer advised me… Too bad you leave… We would have nice company in the evening… ".
