Taverna To Steki
The Doukades is her village Corfu located at an altitude of 170 m. and at a distance of 20 km northwest of the island's capital. The name of the traditional settlement characterized since 1978, came from its first inhabitants who bore the surname "Duke".
Of interest in the village are the renovated stone mansion of the Theotoki family as well as the neoclassical building of the Primary School located at its entrance. However, the Doukades have gained their fame in the last 50 years from their kitchen.
Although their population does not exceed 500 inhabitants, a village lost in the olive groves of the island, thanks to three taverns which became known for the typical Corfiot recipes, the Doukades gather many visitors who come to try them.
It first started in 1960 Elizabeth tavern which operated in the first years as a cafe, with Elizabeth as a coffee maker, frying any eggs for tourists and then putting lentils and making the village an attraction. Mrs. Elizabeth is now approaching 100 and was the cause of the village's reputation. Opposite it, two new taverns were created, next to each other, the Duke and Haunt which are also the gastronomic power of the village fire.
Η tavern the Steki was founded in 1989 by Pavlos Moumouri from the Dukes who married her Zakynthos Spyridoula and together they built the store. Spyridoula, who studied at the school of tourism professions of the time, set up a tavern with professionalism and a passion for cuisine.
The Hangout in Doukades is open all season, while in winter on Fridays and weekends.
The cuisine of Steki is Greek with some classic Greek dishes, moussaka, stuffed and pastitsio but mainly with sofrito, pastitsada and stoufado. Mrs. Spyridoula has lost her husband since the 2000s, but she has her daughters nearby, even though they are educated and with a family, they help her every summer to serve the people properly and to try one of the best sofritos on the island.
